Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)-Adult

Introduction of the course

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is an emergency procedure used to manage a victim of cardiac arrest. The skill is combination of effective compression and ventilation; however the technique may vary based on the victim.

The objective of this module is to:

  • Describe the key concepts related to Adult CPR
  • Understand the basic concepts related to airway management, chest compression technique, pocket mask and bag mask ventilation
  • 1 Rescuer Adult CPR (Demonstration)
  • 2 Rescuer Adult CPR (Demonstration)
  • Manage a victim of Choking (Demonstration)
  • Use of Pocket mask (Demonstration)
  • Use of Bag mask device (Demonstration)

    Details of the Course

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a life saving skill. Knowing how to perform this skill is important to fully utilize the skills, to save a victim's life and to prevent complications that may happen if the rescuer is unsure how to use this skill.

The module is divided into seven parts:

    • Part A- Basic concepts of CPR-Airway management
    • Basic concepts of CPR- Chest Compression Techniques
    • Basic concepts of CPR- Pocket mask
    • Basic concepts of CPR- Bag Mask Ventilation
    • Adult 1- Rescuer CPR
    • Adult 2- Rescuer CPR
    • Choking management in adults

Part A- Basic concepts of CPR-Airway management

Airway management is an important component of CPR. A rescuer must know the skills of opening airway of victim to effectively use devices to support respiration of the victim.

In this part of the module we will elaborate on the following techniques to open the airway.

    • Head tilt- Chin lift method
    • Jaw thrust method

    Airway Management - 2:52

Part B- Basic concepts of CPR- Chest Compression Techniques

Chest compression techniqueEffective chest compression can have a significant role to revive a victim from cardiac arrest.

In this part of the module we will discuss features of quality chest compression. We will also learn about the following in detail.

    • Chest compression using two hands
    • Chest compression with one hand

    Chest Compression Technique - 3:09

Part C- Basic concepts of CPR- Pocket mask

Pocket Mask is a device used by a rescuer when he/she is providing mask to mouth rescue breaths to a cardiac arrest victim. This is a barrier device used by rescuer when bag and mask device or advance airway options are not available for help.

Healthcare professional must learn how to use a pocket mask as these devices are available at public places and can be utilized well to save a life till emergency care professionals reach the scene. We will learn about how to skillfully use this device and important considerations related to its use.

    Pocket Mask - 2:20

Part D- Basic concepts of CPR- Bag Mask Ventilation

Bag Mask Device is an ventilation assist device used by healthcare providers in emergency. The device is used to provide rescue breaths to a victim with difficulty in breathing or no breathing. During CPR, Bag Mask Device is used to provide rescue breaths, until definitive airway management technique such as intubation occurs.

Health care providers must practise this skill as using the device requires effort to create effective air tight seal and maintaining patent airway before the breaths can be delivered using the device.

    Bag Mask Device - 1:59

Part E- Adult 1- Rescuer CPR

Adult 1- Rescuer CPR module would cover the steps to perform CPR if the rescuer is alone. A health care provider may encounter a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest at any place. It has been estimated that the majority of the arrest happen at home. In such situation, the rescuer may have to initiate CPR alone before the help arrives.

The module would discuss in detail about the following:

    • Sudden Cardiac Arrest
    • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Vs Heart Attack
    • Steps of CPR
    • Steps  to perform Adult One Rescuer CPR

    Adult 1-Rescuer CPR - 8:00

Part F- Adult 2- Rescuer CPR

Adult 2-Rescuer CPR sequence must be followed by healthcare providers when two or more rescuers are present to assist the lone rescuer. The technique for performing CPR in an adult victim is essentially the same but responsibilities are shared among the rescuers.

Understanding and practicing to delegate the responsibility is paramount as the rescuer may panic due to seriousness of the situation.

The module would discuss the following in detail:

Steps of Adult Two Rescuer CPR

Responsibilities of various rescuers during CPR

    Adult 2-Rescuer CPR - 6:16

Part G- Choking management in adults

Choking is a life-threatening situation, due to presence of a foreign object lodged in victim’s airway. It can cause grave damage as victim is unable to breath normally during choking.  Early intervention is warranted to prevent complications.

Learn in this module about adult choking:

    • Recognizing choking
    • Mild airway obstruction
    • Severe airway obstruction

Choking Management in Adults - 5:13
