Introduction of the course

This module on Orthodontics is a comprehensive course for the undergraduate BDS students to learn the basic theoretical & clinical aspects of the specialty.  In level 1, the introduction to orthodontic treatment, etiology and classification, instruments & appliances, preventive & interceptive orthodontic treatment options have been covered.

The objective of this course is to:

  • Understand Orthodontic specialty
  • Plan the treatment for orthodontic patients
  • Aid in Diagnosis & Treatment planning
  • Classifying Malocclusion
  • Identify the orthodontic Instruments & appliances
  • Prevent & Intercept malocclusion
  • Identify abnormal oral habits in growing children & correcting them

    Normal Occlusion and Malocclusion

    The goal of modern orthodontics according to Profitt is “the creation of best possible occlusal relationship within the framework of acceptable facial aesthetics and stability of result”. Angle defined– occlusion as the normal relation of the occlusal inclined planes of the teeth when jaws are closed. This lecture is an Introduction to Andrews 6 keys to Normal Occlusion.

    Diagnostic Records in Orthodontics

    Record making appointment is usually the first step in Orthodontic treatment. Diagnostic records play an important role in Diagnosis & Treatment planning of the case.

    Oral Habits

    In this lecture, we will learn about the harmful habits that cause malocclusion. This will help dentists have a better understanding of when and how to treat abnormal habits.

    In this chapter, Learner will understand how mouth breathing occurs and how the swallowing pattern changes. Also, within this chapter there is detail description of intra oral and extra oral features of effects of mouth breathing.

    We all develop habits to help release tension or deal with anxiety. Some of these habits, like finger tapping or knuckle popping, are harmless, while others can be problematic over time. Certain children and even adults develop a habit of chewing on their upper and/or lower lip. In times of stress, all this chewing can lead to wounds that are never given the chance to heal.

    Space maintainers

    space maintainer is an appliance that is custom-made by a dentist or orthodontist in acrylic or metal material. It can be either removable or cemented in a child's mouth. Its purpose is to keep the space open to allow the permanent tooth to erupt and come into place.Find out more about the types and uses through this lecture.
